Mrs. Helen D. Cole

Mrs. Helen D. Cole, age 99 of Winnfield, Louisiana passed away on Saturday, September 22, 2018. Born Friday, December 6, 1918 in Jonesboro, Louisiana, she was preceded in death by her parents, Eugenia Marthann Shows Horton and Nicholas L. Horton; and her husband, John Richard Cole. Mrs. Cole was a very proud and active member of Winnfield and Winn Parish and participated in many civic organizations. She was a member of Pilot Club, Lions Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, Winn Retired Teachers, The American Cancer Society, Winn Home Makers, Readers Review, and the Winn Parish Fair Board. Mrs. Cole retired as a teacher from the Winn Parish School Board and went on to become a member and president. She also was a member, and served as president, of the Louisiana School Board Association. Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Richard B.

Benton “Benny” Killingsworth

Mr. Benton “Benny” Killingsworth, age 73 of Goldonna, Louisiana, passed away September 21, 2018 at Natchitoches Regional Medical Center. Mr. Killingsworth was retired from Willamette and was a graduate of Northwestern State University in Natchitoches with a Bachelors degree in Animal Science. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing. Benny was a hard worker and cared deeply about his children and grandchildren. Benny was the son of the late J. P. Killingsworth Jr. and the late Allie Gertrude Conley Killingsworth. He was also preceded in death by his son Billy Joe Killingsworth and a brother Clinton Killingsworth. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 50 years Susie Hodges Killingsworth, daughter Candace Paul of Goldonna, Louisiana, son Dewade Killingsworth of Moundsville, West Virginia, and grandchildren Stetson DeCotah Hickman (Lanie), Dennon Quade Paul, Colie Nyx Killingsworth, Piper Raylynn Killingsworth, and Gracie Mae Killingsworth.

Mr. Marc Ian Pierce

Mr. Marc Ian Pierce, age 46 of Natchitoches, Louisiana passed away on Saturday, September 22, 2018. He was a lineman with AEP and was a graduate of Calvin High School. Born Friday, October 8, 1971 in Winnfield, he was preceded in death by his father, Larry Pierce and his grandmother, Jacqueline Pierce. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Joanne Foshee Pierce of Natchitoches; children, Janys Pierce of B.C. Canada, Jescey Pierce (Thomas Gourdon) of Clarence, Taylor Smith (Wyatt Sullivan) of Campti and Morgan Dugas of Natchitoches; mother, Dana Cook Pierce of Winnfield as well as numerous other relatives and friends. Gary Wayne Kyson

Funeral services for Gary Wayne Kyson, 73, of Coushatta, LA was held at 11 A.M. Monday, September 24, 2018 at Rockett-Nettles Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Calvin Phelps officiating. Eulogies were given by Lauren Holley, Roy Owens and Al Steagall. Interment followed in Springville Cemetery. Mr. Kyson was born October 28, 1944 in Winnfield, LA and passed away September 20, 2018. At the age of seventeen, Gary left his hometown of Winnfield, LA to join the United States Army where he proudly served with the Finance Corp in Korea. He then went on to work for J.E. Baker of York, PA for thirty-three years. After his retirement, Gary returned back home to Louisiana to operate a ranch where he loved his cattle operation. Gary enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid birdhunter. Pop- Pop, which he was affectionately called by his grandchildren, shared in each of their individual activities, where he was their greatest fan. Gary fought a courageous battle with cancer for three years.

Bobby E. O’Neal

Bobby E. O’Neal, 70, of Winnfield, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018 at Rapides Parish Hospital, Alexandria, La. Born October 27, 1947, he was preceded in death by his parents, Claude E. O’Neal and Laura Jordan O’Neal. Mr. O’Neal was also predeceased by his sister, Shelby Jean O’Neal Howell. Surviving is one daughter, Sandy O’Neal, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by an uncle, Joe B. Jordan, several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Bobby was a lifelong resident of Winnfield. He was employed in construction for several years and then with the Dept. of Highways. He was also a member of the Big Creek Baptist Church, Jordan Hill. Graveside services were held Saturday, September 8, 2018 at Jordan Hill Cemetery with family and friends in attendance.

Andrew Guin

Funeral services for Andrew Guin, 93, of Ashland, LA were held at 2 P.M. Wednesday, September 19, 2018 at Rockett- Nettles Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Dave Moore officiating. Interment followed in Ebenezer Cemetery. Mr. Guin was born October 10, 1924 in Castor, LA and passed away September 18, 2018. Mr. Guin enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing. He was a hard-working man who always provided for his family. He was also a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and will be truly missed by all those who knew him and loved him. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Orita Guin; one son, Rodger Guin; two daughters, Sue Guin Williams and Cathy Guin Saffel; parents, Kit and Lou Guin; one sister and seven brothers. Mr. Guin is survived by three daughters, Barbara Guin of Winnfield, LA, Wanda Wise and husband, Ricky of Calvin, LA and Nina Tyler and husband, Kenneth of Ashland, LA; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

Shirley Beth Hatten

Services for Mrs. Shirley Beth Hatten were held Sunday September 16, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Hixson Brothers Funeral Home in Jena, La. with Bro. Johnnie Phillip and Bro. Bobby McGee officiating. Burial followed in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Aimwell, Louisiana under the direction of Hixson Brothers Funeral Home of Jena. Mrs. Hatten, 77, of Jena, La. was born March 26, 1941 in Jena, La. and passed from this life on Friday, September 14, 2018 at LaSalle General Hospital in Jena, La. Mrs. Hatten was a retired secretary of Louisiana Midland Rail Road. She was preceded in death by her Father, Louis Frazier, Mother, Eunice Corley Frazier and Brother Jerry Louis Frazier, all of Jena, Louisiana. Those left to cherish in her memory include her husband Roy L. Hatten of Jena Louisiana, son, Roy Daniel Perry and wife Jan of Alexandria, La., daughter, Darla Boyd and husband George of Trout, La., five Grandsons and ten Great Grand Children.

Ms. Jana Smith Speaks on PBIS Program at Rotary Club

For the meeting on Wednesday, September 12, the Rotarian for the week was Pastor Kevin Smith, who also serves as the current president of the Winnfield Rotarians. His guest speaker was Jana Smith. Jana holds a career of being an educator at the Winnfield Primary School. She also helps with the ministry of First Methodist Church along side her husband, Kevin Smith.

For her program she gave insight of a program/grant that was given awarded the Winnfield Primary School named PBIS. PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Incentive System. In 2003 this program was introduced, and in 2011 it was mandated in the state of Louisiana that every school carry out this positive behavior incentive. This is an effort to help reward positive and good behavior in the school system.

Traffic Stop Results in Illegal Drug Charges

On the afternoon of September 11, a routine traffic stop resulting in the arrest of a Winnfield man on illegal drug charges.

Sgt Brian Glenn of the Winnfield Police Department was conducting a traffic stop for a stop sign and seat belt violation and upon further investigation found Glen Z. Wade, age 61, in possession of several grams of crystal methamphetamine.

Suspects Identified for Last Weeks Shooting

UPDATE—9/12/2018 Suspects in this case have been identified as Brian L. Breaux, age 20, and Jabari A. Hall, also age 20. Both are still incarcerated in the Natchitoches Detention Center on unrelated charges. Warrants have been issued for their arrest. Charges include Attempted 1st Degree Murder and Attempted Armed Robbery. Breaux also faces additional charges of Home Invasion and Possession of a Firearm by Convicted Felon. Upon release from Natchitoches, they will be brought to Winnfield and set for arraignment.

A charge only means there is enough probable cause for an arrest. Persons are presumed innocent until found guilty by a court of law.
