Heisman winners at WSHS

On Nov. 18, The Heisman Trophy Trust and Acceptance Insurance announced Amaya McClain and David Simmons as the 2020 School Winners for the Heisman High School Scholarship presented by Acceptance Insurance.

Middle School Tigers Remain Undefeated

The Winnfield Middle School Tigers came into last Thursdays game with Grant without 13 Tigers as due to quarantine from the Jonesboro game. That didn’t seem to matter as the Tigers came ready for the challenge. Coach Bryan Savell said “We talked to the kids and told them a lot of players will get a chance to play tonight, so step up to the challenge and get it done. I had no doubt they would rise to the occasion.”

NSU Fall sports postponed until Spring 2021

The Southland Conference announced Thursday the league will postpone fall sports conference competitions in football, volleyball, soccer and cross country with the intent of playing in the spring semester.

WSHS Powerlifting: The Light Still Shines Bright

On March 13, only five days away from the LHSAA Powerlifting State Championships, the rug was pulled out from under Louisiana high school powerlifting. The Winnfield Senior High School Tiger Powerlifting Team was poised to win a state championship with the numbers they put up in the meets they participated in, placing first in the Calvary Baptist and Leesville Meets. The Tigers went on and placed first in their division at the Regional meet in Pineville with all lifters qualifying for the state tournament to be held at the University of Louisiana Monroe on March 18.

As you are all aware, Gov. John Bel Edwards in consultation with the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) and the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) jointly announced in his proclamation on Friday, April 3, 2020 that all Louisiana public K-12 school facilities will remain closed through April 30, 2020.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 crisis, Louisiana’s statewide 211 network has answered a record-breaking number of calls about COVID-19. “We were activated on March 12. By 7 p.m. March 29, our call centers had answered 27,391 phone calls,” said Sarah Berthelot, Louisiana Association of United Way President and CEO who serves as Louisiana 211 director of disaster response during statewide activations. Gov. John Bel Edwards encourages citizens to call 211 with questions.
