Kindergarten Registration Dates Announced for Winn Parish Schools

The excitement continues as future kindergarten students are encouraged to register for the 2022-2023 school year. The Winn Parish School Board would like to announce the following dates for kindergarten registration. Kindergarten Registration will be held at Calvin High School on Friday, May 13, 2022. Kindergarten Registration will be held at Winnfield Primary School, Atlanta High School, and Dodson High School on Monday, May 23, 2022. Birth certificate, up to date immunization record, and social security card are required for enrollment. If you are already enrolled in prekindergarten in the school where you will attend kindergarten, you do not have to attend Kindergarten Registration. Individual schools will send letters in the mail closer to the 2022- 2023 school year with information for their future kindergarten students so it is important that these students register their mailing information.

The Lady Calvin Lady Cougars are headed to Sulphur. The girls shut out Plainview and took the win this past week with a 11-0 win.

Pitcher Haley Martin didn’t allow a single run, throwing a complete game shutout and leading the Cougars to victory.

In the first inning, Camden Johnson doubled on a 3-2 count and scored a run. In the fifth inning the Cougars gained five more runs. Senior Lauren Trawick got a home run and Haley Martin came through with a double.

Martin allowed zero runs on three hits over five innings, striking out five and walking one. Martin, Lily Barnes, Trawick, and Johnson all had multiple hits for the Lady Cougars.

The Lady Cougars will be playing the semi-finals at Frasch Park in Sulphur on Friday, April 29 against Summerfield with hopes to advance to finals on Saturday. Good luck Lady Cougars!

Two female juveniles were charged and later released to their parents after bringing and consuming alcohol and edible THC during school hours at Winnfield Middle School. The students were taken to Winn Parish Medical Center after their parents were called by school administration.

Due to both being juveniles, names are not being released. One student was charged with possession of Schedule I, possession of Schedule I in a drug free zone, and unauthorized possession of alcohol on school property, and public possession of alcohol under 21. The second student was charged with possession of schedule I and possession of schedule I in a drug free zone.

Sheriff Cranford Jordan asks parents to “please keep a vigil and watch what is going on with their children. This is so dangerous and there have been so many deaths due to drug overdoses recently. We love our children and want them safe.”

Crash on Gum Springs Road Claims the Life of Natchitoches Woma

On April 17, 2022, at approximately 7:00 a.m., Louisiana State Police Troop E responded to a two-vehicle fatal crash on Gum Springs Road near Dickerson Road. This crash claimed the life of 32-year-old Da’Anna Kennedy of Natchitoches.

The initial investigation revealed a 2004 Toyota Camry, driven by 22-year-old Taylor Hudson of Natchitoches, was northbound on Gum Springs Road. For reasons still under investigation, Hudson’s vehicle crossed the centerlines into the southbound travel lane and collided head-on with a southbound 2014 Cadillac SRX, driven by Kennedy.

Kennedy, who was not restrained, sustained severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries. Hudson, who was restrained, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Routine toxicology samples were obtained and submitted for analysis.

Rapides Regional Medical Center’s Trauma team visited Winn Parish Medical Center earlier this month to teach a Rural Trauma Team Development Course.

“The goal of the class is to help rural healthcare facilities develop a systematic approach when caring for trauma patients,” said Shawn Moreau, MSN, TCRN, CEN, Trauma Program Director. “Once processes are put in place and the appropriate team members are identified and know their roles and responsibilities, trauma patients can be stabilized quickly and transferred to a nearby Trauma Center.

Rapides Regional Medical Center is the area’s only Level II Trauma Center and is the closest Trauma Center to several rural hospitals, many of which had representatives in attendance for this training. Jeremy Timmer, MD, FACS, Trauma Medical Director for Rapides Regional Trauma Center, was featured presenter.

A Retirement Reception will be held at Williams Optometry Clinic, at 1605 West Court St. honoring Dr. Jerry Williams and his Office Manager Gayle Gilrease. Dr. Williams has been for practicing 67 years, 63 of those in Winnfield. Mrs. Gayle Gilcrease has been with Dr. Williams for 47 years. The reception will be held Thursday, April 14, 2022 from 3:00-5:00pm. Dr. Bill Gaddis and staff will host the event.

Winnfield’s Mayor Elect Is Gerald “Scooter” Hamms

Two-term District Two Councilman Gerald “Scooter” Hamms has been elected Mayor of the City of Winnfield, becoming the first person of color to hold the seat.

In addition to the Mayor’s race, City Councilmen members Matt Miller District Four and Teresa Phillips in District Five were reelected, there’s a new councilmember for District One and District Three whiles a runoff is set for the District Two seat held by mayorelect Hamms.

Hamms defeated incumbent Mayor George Moss by 82 votes in the March 26 election. Hamms received 557 of the 1,104 votes cast, giving him 50.45 percent of the vote. He avoided a runoff by receiving three votes more than he needed to become Mayor.

Moss, who was in his first term as mayor received 475 votes while a third candidate Timothy Hudgins collected 72 votes.

Red River Quilters Announce Quilt Show

Friday, July 29 – Saturday, July 20 the Red River Quilters will hold its annual quilt show at the Louisiana Fairgrounds Ag Building at 3701 Hudson Ave, Shreveport. This year’s theme is “New to You in 2022.”

The hours will be Friday, 9am-6pm and Saturday, 9am-4pm. Admission will be $10 for ages 11 – Adult, $5 ages 5-10, and under 5, admission is free.

Lenita Smith will be the featured quilter and there will be over 200 quilts and quilted items on display with a silent auction being held. Handmade items will be for sale in the Guild Booth and there will be tickets available for a queen-sized quilt made by Red River Quilters guild members with proceeds going to fund community service projects.
