LEAP tests begin in March

Winn Parish students, as well as students throughout the state, will be taking the state standardized tests in two phases again this year. Phase I testing will be March 18. Students in fourth and eighth grades will complete the LEAP English
Language Arts writing and Math constructed response items.

Jury votes to repair pot holes; removes road from system

The Winn Parish Police Jury met for their Feb. 18 meeting to discuss road improvements and to repair various areas of the parish. Road Superintendent Perry Holmes presented an update on road projects in the parish. Holmes presented the jury
with a proposal from the Creosote plant in Winnfield to have that area zoned as an industrial complex.

Council adopts MWPP, Zero Tolerance Resolutions

The Winnfield City Council met on Feb. 11 to discuss various resolutions, and to give awards to two Winnfield citizens. Councilman Matt Miller asked City Attorney Herman Castete for an update on litigation concerning damage to a street as a result, the council says, of the new library facility’s construction crew. The council moved to file a suit against the construction crew, and Castete remarked that it would be filed “forthwith.”

Cigarette ban vote approaching

At the urging of District 29 State Senator Rick Gallot (DRuston), members of the Louisiana Legislature will consider a measure to prohibit the sale of electronic cigarettes to minors during the 2014 Regular Session, which begins March 10. Electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigarettes or vaporizers, do not burn tobacco or produce combustible “smoke” like traditional cigarettes; however they do contain habit-forming nicotine.

Changes coming to driver’s licenses

Louisiana is transitioning to a new driver’s license and identification card that looks much the same; however, it contains features for greater security, protection of privacy and resistance to tampering. The new license has multiple layers of security features, all linked to each other. A few examples are:
- Tri-color overlay
- Multi-colored fine line printing
- “Ghost” image of the customers photo.

Qualifying for City elections begin Wed

The qualifying period for offices in the City of Winnfield, including mayor, city council and chief of police, will take place  between Wednesday, Feb. 12 and Friday, Feb. 14. Candidates must register and pay at the Winn Parish Clerk of Court’s Office at the Winn Parish Courthouse between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on those respective dates.
