Fall Festival Slated Oct. 31

The 2024 Fall Festival has been slated for October 31 in downtown Winnfield from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. when Main Street is traditionally lined with booths, tables and pickup trucks from the Methodist Church down to the Political Museum where youngsters can find plenty of Trick or Treat goodies.

A good starting point for activities is always the Costume Contest for all ages, set to begin at 5:30 p.m. (registration at 5 p.m.) at the Louisiana Political Museum. Six age groups are 0-3 years, 4-7 years, 8-10 years, 1113 years, 14-17 years and 18 years and up. There will also be Theme Groups and Pets divisions.

Along the route, downtown Treaters will also find Bounce Houses beside First Baptist Church, free food (hot dogs, chips and drinks) and the Pumpkin Patch located at the First United Methodist Church.

The Kiwanis Installation banquet was held Monday, October 7th at Mama’s Iron Skillet. The meeting opened with the pledge of Allegiance, prayer requests, prayer and the defining statement. President Margaret Coon welcomed the attendees and took care of a little business. Then a delicious meal of pork loin, loaded mashed potatoes, green beans, roll and Awesome cake was enjoyed.

Early Voting Begins Oct 18

Early Voting will be held in the Registrar of Voters office in the Winn Parish Courthouse Friday, October 18 through Tuesday, October 29 (closed Sunday, October 20 and 27) from 8:30 AM until 6:00 PM. Enter through the Main Street entrance. The election will be Tuesday, November 5.

Download the GeauxVote app, which allows you to view your sample ballot and monitor results on Election night.

Sample ballots are also posted on the wall outside the Registrar of Voters Office.

Reminder: ALL Absentee by Mail ballots must be received in the Registrar of Voters Office by 4:30 PM on Monday, November 4. The deadline to request an Absentee by Mail ballot is November 1, however, the Registrar strongly advises that you request a ballot as soon as possible to ensure that you have time to receive and return the ballot.

Fines for Speeding Associated with Camera Photo Ticketing System Approved

A fter approving some “terminology” language changes that cleared the way for the implementation of a camera photo ticketing system to begin in the City of Winnfield, the city has now agreed on fines for those tickets. Below is a list of those fines: 10 to 19 MPH over $165.00 20 to 29 MPH over $175.00 30 MPH and over $185.00 (In a School Zone) 6 to 10 MPH over $170.00 11 to 15 MPH over $185.00 16 to 20 MPH over $185.00 OVER 21 MPH $185.00 Three of the five councilmen present at last month’s meeting, with one councilman being there via a zoom call, voted to move forward with the measure to implement the camera photo ticketing system. It was approved by a 3-1 vote. Matt Miller cast the nay vote while Chiquita Caldwell, who introduced the measure, and Teresa Phillips voted for approval, as did Councilwoman Ada Hall Dudley, who was not present but attended by Zoom. Councilwoman Ericka Breda was not present.

Winn Parish 4H Forestry Team Brings Home Win

Congratulations to the Winn Parish 4-H Forestry Team. They recently won the State 4-H Forestry Contest and qualified for the National Forestry Contest in Weston, West Virginia in July.

Secretary of State Nancy Landry reminds voters that the deadlines to register to vote in the Nov. 5 Presidential General and Open Congressional Primary Election are quickly approaching. The deadline to register in person, by mail, or at the OMV Office is Monday, Oct. 7 . The deadline to register through the GeauxVote Online Registration System is Tuesday, Oct. 15. This deadline is for citizens who have never registered to vote, as well as voters who would like to make changes to their registration.

The Winn Strengthening Families Program, in partnership with the Healthy Alliance Coalition, recently organized an impactful presentation for the students of Winnfield Middle School, featuring guest speaker Divarious Holden. Introduced by Shonna Moss, Mr. Holden spoke to the students about making important life decisions and emphasized the significance of maintaining a clean school record, explaining that it can affect their future well beyond their school years.

During his presentation, Mr. Holden addressed critical topics such as personal safety, the dangers of human traffick ing, drugs, school violence, and bullying. He urged students to stay in school and pursue a solid education, highlighting how these choices can shape the rest of their lives.
