Parish students return back to school, but so does COVID resurgence

Winn Parish Schools started back on Friday, Aug. 6, but this week marks the first full week back for students. The return also marks more changes for schools as COVID-19’s Delta Variant has recently surged throughout the nation

Winn Parish returned back to school this week, and with it COVID-19 has returned back with the new contagious and more deadly Delta variant.

Gov. John Bel Edwards reinstated a state-wide mask mandate on Aug. 2 hat will last until next month, which includes all students from Kindergarten to grade 12 to wear mask while at school, which has caused a heated debate in the parish and the state.

“At this point the issue is not what is my opinion or what is that of our board members,” Superintendent Alfred Simmons said. “Rather the issue is wheter the district must follow the governor’s mandates.

The governor also pointed out that the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) and local health officials recommend that mask be worn in schools.
