Jo Nell Windham Stewart

Jo Nell Windham Stewart

Jesus ushered into Heaven His good and faithful servant, Jo Nell Windham Stewart, on June 24, 2021 at the age of 91. She was born on May 24, 1930 to Minor William Windham and Monta Sudie Kilcrease Windham on the family farm in Logansport, LA. She was one of 18 children in a blended family that labored perpetually to survive the challenges of the Depression in rural north Louisiana. The family lived off the land with no electricity, gas or plumbing. Jo Nell’s parents died when many of the children were still at home, but she was blessed with five dear siblings who loved and supported each other throughout her entire life. Through hard work and perseverance, Jo Nell graduated Logansport High School as the valedictorian of her class. Soon thereafter, she moved to Mansfield, LA to work as a bookkeeper at a wholesale grocery business. While in Mansfield, Jo Nell met William “Buddy” Stewart and the two were married on May 3, 1952. Jo Nell and Buddy had three sons and raised the family in Winnfield, LA. Buddy was a lifelong forester and Jo Nell was the secretary of the First Methodist Church of Winnfield for 44 years. Buddy passed away in 1989 and Jo Nell remained in Winnfield and retired from the Church at age 78.

Jo Nell was the epitome of grace and humility. Faith and family were all she needed. Well, she would have liked one more trip to the Rockies with Buddy. During her beautiful and long life, she faithfully put God first, others second and herself third. Her life followed the Biblical instructions to “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” (Colossians 3:12)

Jo Nell is survived by sisters Louise Hooper and Louella Gates and brother Lamar Windham. She is also survived by sons Bill (and wife Bess), Graham (and wife Mary) and Reagan (and wife Kathy). Jo Nell had four grandchildren: Ian (and wife Aimee), Mark, Lauren, and Annie. She also had 4 great-grandchildren: Dillon, MacKenzie, Presley, and Jacob.

Visitation will be held at First United Methodist Church in Winnfield on Friday, July 2, 2021 from 9:30 am until service time. The funeral will be held at 11:00 am at First United Methodist Church of Winnfield. The funeral will be followed with the burial at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Winnfield.

The family wants to express its deep appreciation to the entire patient care team at Clarity Hospice in Baton Rouge for the care and compassion they displayed to Jo Nell and the Stewart family.

Jo Nell was a lifelong Methodist and a faithful member and employee of the First United Methodist Church of Winnfield. Her love for the Church and the family’s gratitude for everything that the Church did for Jo Nell and her family is immeasurable. Therefore in lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to: First United Methodist Church; 300 Main Street; Winnfield, LA 71483.
