Troy Thomas Kelly

Mr. Tom Kelly, age 90 of Dodson, passed through the gates of Heaven on June 5, 2021 to meet his Savior, Jesus Christ, and loved ones that have preceded him. Mr. Kelly was a former newspaper publisher operating several newspapers.

Kelly was a graduate of Dodson High School and attended Louisiana State University and graduated from Northwestern State University with a degree in journalism. He began his career in journalism as a reporter for the Winn Parish Enterprise in 1949.

During the next 10 years he served in various positions at the weekly Sevier County News-Record in Sevierville, Tn, at the Gladewater [Texas] Daily Mirror and the weekly Natchitoches Enterprise.

In 1959 he joined the Jennings Daily News as managing editor in 1962 he became partner and publisher of The Ruston Daily Leader in Ruston, Louisiana. After almost 20 years as publisher he moved to Slidell where he managed the Slidell Daily Times.

Kelly was also organizer and president of the Enterprise Group, Inc., a newspaper management company that published newspapers in Louisiana, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Florida.

Following a move to Las Cruses, New Mexico, he attempted semi-retirement but soon found a weekly newspaper in the area of Hatch, NM for sale, bought it and ran it for 10 years. During this time he also bought and published an established monthly speakers digest periodical for speakers providing quotes, stories and antidotes.

At the age of 65, when most people are seeking retirement, Kelly moved back to his beloved North Louisiana and began the monthly publication about the Louisiana Forest industry, The Piney Woods Journal. He published this for over 20 years before selling and moving into “real” retirement at the age of 87.

Working in the communities he served, he always worked to have the local newspaper serve the community for growth, education and service. He worked tirelessly in the Kiwanis Clubs, Chamber of Commerce and other civic leadership capacities in the various communities where he lived.

In 2019 he was awarded the Louisiana Press Association the 50 year club recognition for his service in the field of journalism.

A true journalist with a love for the written word and service to the community will be a legacy he leaves for others to follow.
