On The Bright Side

On The Bright Side

One of my favorite Tshirts simply has the word “Tetelestai” on the front.

This was the last thing Jesus said in John 19:30 before he died on the cross.

“Tetelestai” means “It Is Finished” in Greek.

It’s extremely important to know that Jesus spoke in the perfect tense when He said “It is finished.” Speaking in the perfect tense is very rare in the New Testament and there is no English equivalent.

The “perfect tense” is linear, so it means that whatever is said is both true in that moment and continues forward into the future, having ongoing, endless implications.

Jesus’s use of the perfect tense when He said “It is finished” has incredible significance to Christians, because He is actually saying, “It is finished now and will always continue to be finished.”
