Thomas Jerry Martin

Mr. Thomas Jerry Martin, age 82 of Winnfield, passed away Thursday, March 12, 2020. He was born September 14, 1937 in Robeline, Louisiana.

Thomas Jerry was a 1956 graduate of Winnfield High School and a 1963 graduate of Northwestern State University. He was an ironworker for many years, and also was employed as a welding instructor. He retired from the Jackson Parish School Board after 25 years and then taught welding classes for CLTCC at Winnfield Senior High School. T. J. was very passionate about working with young people and was a mentor to many of his welders.

Throughout his life, Thomas Jerry was an active church member and was serving as a deacon at First Baptist Church of Winnfield.

Over the years, he was involved in the Royal Ambassador (R .A.) program, coached church league softball and basketball teams and spent many years coaching Dixie League Baseball. He proudly served on the Winn Parish Police Jury and enjoyed visiting with and working for his constituents.

Thomas had many hobbies and interests. He loved animals, gardening, hunting, and fishing. He especially loved spending time with and mentoring his grandchildren and great grandchildren. These kids held a very special place in his heart.

Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his parents, Van Breland David Martin and Mary Bessie McCarty Martin; son-in-law Mike Austin; and daughter-in-law Kristy Thaxton Martin.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Patsy Mixon Martin; children Greg Martin, Tami Martin Austin, Jed Martin (Tami), and Macy Compton (Roxan); grandchildren, Ethan, Evan, Harli , Cole, Breland, Jeremy, Alyssa, Cody, Stuart, Cacy, and Chace; great grandchildren, Brent, Steven, Lincoln, Lydia, Liam, Landry, Andrew, Gracie, Canyon, Keegan, Jackson, Kennedy, Gunner, and Sophia; and siblings Barbara Martin Clark and Mack Vernon Martin (Andrea).

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 15, 2020 at the First Baptist Church of Winnfield with Dr. Calvin Phelps and Rev. Clovis Sturdivant officiating. Interment followed in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery under the direction of Southern Funeral Home of Winnfield.

Friends visited with the family in the funeral home on Saturday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. until 1:45 p.m.

Serving as pallbearers were Cody Compton, Cole Martin, Ethan Austin, Evan Austin, Breland Martin, Canyon Compton and Keegan Compton.

Memorial donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Winnfield and or the American Cancer Society.
