WPSB Honors Students of the Year, Reviews Audit

On February 3, the Winn Parish School Board recognized the Students of the Year winners and reflected on the audit for the previous year. Superintendent Steve Bartlett voiced, “It’s my pleasure to recognize outstanding students and their accomplishments.” In Winn Parish, the Grade 5 winner was Finlay McManus of Winnfield Middle School, the Grade 8 winner was Alyssa VanBlaricum of Winnfield Middle School, and the Grade 12 winner was Kate Nevils of Winnfield Senior High School. Mr. Bartlett explained that these three individuals will go to the rigorous regional competition, where Winn Parish has “always competed well.” Regional winners will advance to the state level, and Mr. Bartlett shared that he will be looking for a first place prize, adding, “I think this’ll be the year.” This year is Nevils’ third time competing as Student of the Year, as she also won in grades 5 and 8 – and last time won second place at state. Mr. Bartlett teasingly asked, “Now, Kate, what’s above a number two?” to which she laughingly replied, “Number one.” He wished the students luck and boasted that throughout Nevils’ 12 years of school, she has never made any grade less than an A.
