Rotary Meets Political Writer

Rotarian for the week of January 8, 2020, was State Representative Jack McFarland. McFarland’s guest was Ruston native and Louisiana Tech graduate Greg Hilburn, the chief political writer for Monroe’s The News-Star. His writings also can be found in Alexandria’s The Town Talk, The Shreveport Times, and Lafayette’s The Daily Advertiser, all parts of the USA Today network.

Essentially, Hilburn communicates to North Louisiana what’s going on in Baton Rouge. He has had the opportunity to cover state government as well as national issues on occasion – He reportedly has covered President Trump seven or eight times. To paint a picture of his job, Hilburn explained that he is invited to closely follow the President as a pool reporter, which means he shadows Trump from Air Force One to the motorcade, documenting everything that is said. After reporting the coverage, Hilburn’s work is made available to other reporters and news outlets that cannot be where he is.
