Recently, the Rotary Club of Winnfield welcomed Kim Nation, one of the pioneers behind the Baby Safe Sleep Alliance of Winn Parish. The goal of this Baby Sleep Safe Initiative is to create a safe sleeping environment for babies from the age of birth to 12 months, to educate caregivers, and to provide helpful resources.

Nation shared that in 2018, the infant mortality rate in Louisiana (the number of deaths per 1000 live births) was 8.9. In 2015-2017, Louisiana held the 5 th highest infant mortality rate. Most parents are familiar with SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), which occurs when a child between 0-12 months passes away with no explanation. However, SUID (Sudden Unexpected Infant Death) is the sudden and unexpected death of a baby less than one year old in which the cause was not obvious before investigation. After investigation, though, a cause is found (commonly asphyxiation or suffocation).
