B.J. Perry, Jr.

B.J. Perry, Jr., 62. of Charleston, South Carolina, passed away on Saturday, October 20, 2019. B.J. was born to Mae and Bobby Perry in Lake Charles, Louisiana on October 25, 1956. He called Winnfield home for 12 years before graduating from Winnfield Senior High School and going on to graduate from the Northwestern School of Nursing. B.J. worked for the Traveling Nurse Corps for a number of years, living in many different places, before settling down in Charleston, South Carolina. He worked as a nurse for many years, but said that his time working with hospice care was the most rewarding job that he had ever had, considering it an honor and a blessing. He married Denise Southerland on August 31, 1997, and they lived there for the remainder of his life, attending the Seacoast Church of Charleston. He loved traveling, cooking, and reading. BJ used his love of cooking to cook for the volunteer men’s group at his church. After Hurricane Katrina he coordinated the collection and delivery of medical supplies for the recovery effort and volunteered his nursing skills with New Orleans evacuees. His heroes were Travis Magee and Jimmy Buffett.

B.J. is survived by his wife, Denise Perry and their dog Max; his parents Bob and Mae Perry; his siblings: Missy Perry (Clint Copponex), Rusty Perry, Teri Perry-Copponex (Bart Copponex); and his nieces and nephews: Savannah Johnson, Caroline Copponex and Cameron Copponex, as well as his longtime friend and partner in crime Phil Straley.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 on Friday, November 8 at First Baptist Church in Winnfield.
