Services for Ernest H. (Rusty) Melton, Jr., age 74, of Hammond, Louisiana were held Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 10:00 AM in the Southern Funeral Home Chapel in Winnfield, Louisiana with Pastor Ty James officiating. Burial followed in the Melton Cemetery Rusty was born March 30, 1943, in Riverside, CA where his father (Ernest Sr.) was stationed during World War II, and where his father met and married his mother (Grace). The family moved to Winnfield, Louisiana (where his father was from) after the war ended and he spent the rest of his childhood growing up in Winnfield. He attended Louisiana College and graduated with a double major in Accounting and Psychology. Rusty began his career as a sales associate for Baker Shoe Store, while attending college, and held a managerial position at the Baker Shoe Store in Lake Charles. Missing his native Winn Parish, he returned home to serve as a Case Worker for the Winnfield Welfare Dept. He also ventured into real estate and worked alongside, Lou, as owners of Key Real Estate in Winnfield. Rusty retired from the State of Louisiana, after a total of 36 years of service in multiple capacities such as a Probation and Parole officer, member of the State Parole Board and an investigator with the Attorney General’s office. During retirement, he served as a Security Officer at the West Feliciana Parish Courthouse. Rusty was a Master Mason and a member of Eastern Star Lodge No. 151 F&AM in Winnfield, Louisiana. Rusty was a kind-hearted person who never met a stranger. He enjoyed being around people and always lit up a room with his smile and wonderful personality. If anyone ever needed help, family, friend or stranger, he would be there…ready and willing to give his assistance. Passionate about his family…he was a devoted husband to his wife, and father to his three children, who he loved dearly. He will definitely be missed by his family and friends. Rusty is survived by his wife, Lou; his daughters, Wendy Burns (Todd), and Dena Howard (Jeff), and son, Chad Melton (Lauren); his sister, Janice Stroud (Glen); Grandchildren, Tyler Howard, Matthew Howard, Eli Melton, Belle Melton, Lilah Melton, Nathan Burns and Benjamin Burns. Rusty was preceded in death by his daughter, Tonya, his parents, Ernest and Grace Melton, Grandparents, Luther and Tennie Melton and Frank and Helen Simpson. Serving as pallbearers were Jeff Howard, Tyler Howard, Matthew Howard, Eli Melton, Todd Burns, Ben Burns In lieu of flowers, donations in Rusty’s name may be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation and the Alzheimer’s Association.
