Lizzie Mae Griffin Newsom

Funeral services for Lizzie Mae Griffin Newsom were held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 in the Southern Funeral Home Chapel, Winnfield, LA. Officiating was the Reverend Randy Johnson. Burial followed at the Sikes Baptist Church Cemetery, Sikes, LA, under the direction of Southern Funeral Home. Born Lizzie Mae Griffin January 26, 1922 into the family of Harvey & Etta Mae Griffin the third daughter and sixth child. Lizzie was introduced to tragedy very early in life, when at barely six years of age she lost her mother, Etta Mae to injuries suffered from a fall. Next her oldest brother Luther Emerson succumbed to Typhoid Fever, then her youngest brother, Johnny Ralph, only four, were all lost in just 72 days. Five months later her second brother, Robert Lincoln drown while swimming. Three and a half years later Lizzie’s middle sister, Myrtle Irene was lost. A short three additional years later her dad, Harvey Griffin, succumbed to Pneumonia, just a few days before Lizzie had attained the age of fourteen. Of the three children to survive the Griffin Family disaster, Lizzie was youngest. A brother, Troy and oldest sister Letha, who was ten years older & married to Breard Zeigler, but not financially capable of raising her two younger siblings. Within the local community, at Sikes, La., two families took in one each of the adolescent Griffin children to be raised with their own family. Lizzie found a place in the home & hearts of the Mae & Monroe Erskin family, which had three children slightly older than herself, James, Ben, & Helen with Lizzie completing their family. Lizzie was always considered and treated just as much a child of the Erskins family as their three natural children. Lizzie having a natural talent became an accomplished pianist, and was one of several young pianist who provided music for the Sikes Baptist Church while in school and past graduation. She accepted Christ into her heart early in life and was active in church service for many years. Following her marriage she served as pianist for the Shady Grove Baptist Church for many years. Lizzie graduated from Sikes High School in 1941 with honors and received a scholarship to the Louisiana Baptist College at Pineville, Louisiana. During her high school years she met her one & only love, Laurie J. Newsom, who she married April 24, 1943. The marriage produced one son, James Newsom, Jr. Lizzie was employed by the Winn Parish Library System, as the Sikes Branch Librarian during three separate periods in her life. The first following her graduation from Sikes High School and again while her husband was overseas in combat during World War II. Her last tenure ended when she retired November 15, 2002, after 34 years & 5 months service. Lizzie was preceded in death by her sister Letha Griffin Zeigler in 1984, brother Troy Titus Griffin in 1990, her husband of 57 plus years in 2001, both adoptive parents & all three adoptive siblings. After her husband passed away, Lizzie continued to live in their home, vacationed with her son and his family during many vacations. She visited grandchildren and remained very active until past ninety years of age, although by that time she was living with her son & daughter-in-law. Lizzie was living at home with her son and daughter-in-law until 28 August 2017 when an infection required hospital care for ten days. Following her hospital care, Lizzie went to rehab, where first a blood clot developed in her leg requiring treatment, then a number of other health problems followed in rapid succession ending in kidney failure which claimed her life Saturday night about 9:30 p.m. 6 January 2018, at the Garden Park Nursing Home where she had been a residence since 1 December 2017, just twenty days short of her 96th birthday. Left to cherish Lizzie’s memory is her son & daughter-in-law James & Deviona Newsom of Stonewall, LA; four grandchildren Dr. Belinda Dawn Newsom of Murfreesboro, AR; Shari Renee Favors of Stonewall, LA; James Sterling Newsom & wife Andreanna of Stonewall, LA and Amanda Dale Newsom of Keithville, LA.; one great-grandson James Franklin Favors also of Keithville, LA; and sister- in-law Katherine Newsom of Olla, LA; along with a host of nieces & nephews. The eulogy & service for Lizzie will be delivered & conducted by Rev. Randall Johnson, Pastor Countryside Baptist Church at Keithville, LA, where Lizzie attended Church since the mid- 2000’s until fairly recent. Providing that last service to Lizzie, are her pallbearers: Darrel Ray, Brian Keith & Kramer Newsom, Kevin Richardson, Courtney Smith & George Zeigler. Honorary pallbearers are: Gerald Carpenter, Ray Ben Erskin, Bennie Warren & Rev. Miles “Sammy” Zeigler.
