Dr. Jack B. Evans

Retired dentist of Winnfield, Louisiana, Dr. Jack B. Evans, age 98, passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2017. Born on Thursday, May 8, 1919, in Catahoula Parish, Louisiana, he volunteered for military service with the Army Air Corps in September, 1939, and served through the end of WW II, earning two Purple Heart awards and reaching the rank of First Lieutenant. After the war, he used the GI Bill to earn, in May, 1951, a DDS degree from Loyola University in New Orleans. He practiced dentistry for one year in Winnsboro, Louisiana, and then in Winnfield, Louisiana, from 1953 until he retired in 1993. Dr. Evans was a member of First Baptist Church of Winnfield where he attended the Sanctuary Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Winnfield Kiwanis Club, the Gideons, and the American Dental Society. He was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Helen Andrews Evans, and his parents, George and Lilly Evans. Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Ann Horton and husband Robert, Sugar Land, TX; granddaughter, Amy Horton and husband Adam Thornton, Tucson, AZ; grandson, Michael Horton and wife Josi Beck, Issaquah, WA; and great grandson, Jack Horton, Issaquah, WA.; two brothers, C.F. Evans of Pineville, La., and Johnny Evans of Harrisonburg, La., and two sisters Louise “Shorty” Stevens of Natchez Ms. and Sue Flacy of Harrisonburg, La. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, January 02, 2018 at First Baptist Church with Rev. John Holland officiating. Interment followed in the Garden of Memories, in Winnfield, under the direction of Southern Funeral Home. Serving the family as pallbearers were Marcus Evans, Gerald Crawford, Bill Crawford, Greg Crawford, Gary Evans and Lee Willis. Honorary pallbearers were Senator Jim Fannin, Dr. Jerry Williams, Mickey Simmons, Robert Flacy, Terry Taylor, Steve Bates, Dr. Bill Gaddis, Jim Amberg, Sherriff Cranford Jordan, Billy Lee, Don Causey, Paul Harlan, Jesse Dale Brewer, Phillip Wilkerson, Dwight Callender, and Charles Carroll.
