Local Hero’s Service To Country Not Forgotten

Recently, a special group of young men from Winnfield Senior High School were recognized for their efforts in honoring a veteran from our parish.

Mr. Thomas Edward Hunter passed away on September 12, 2017, at the age of 93. Mr. Hunter was a World War II veteran who served in Normandy and fought with our troops to liberate Europe from the Nazis. Unfortunately, because Mr. Hunter had no close family, he spent his final years mostly alone, in a nursing home. He outlived all of his siblings and never married or had any children. As a result, he had no one to serve as pallbearers at his funeral.

When word of Mr. Hunter’s passing reached the high school, six WSHS football players—Matthew Harrell, Brett Jurek, Justin Lawson, T. J. Homan, Christian Evans, and Lee Estay— stepped up to serve as pallbearers for Mr. Hunter. In addition, Southern Funeral Home arranged for military honors, along with the flag and the playing of taps at the services for Mr. Hunter. Members of the Patriot Guard also honored Mr. Hunter with an escort to his final resting place.
