Winn Students Train For Workforce

Students in Winn Parish gota first-hand look at the workings of local businesses this summer through the Winn Parish Jump Start Summer Career Education Initiative. Jump Start, which was held from June 12 through June 30, saw thirty-three Winn students receive work place skills and academic credit through an extensive three-week course.The course was divided in to two sections, with the first two weeks dedicated to training students and allowing them to earn Industry Based Credentials in the following fields:

Customer Sales and Service, OSHA 10 – General Industry, Safety and Pollution Prevention, and CPR/AED. Students spent the third week visiting seven different Winn Parish job sites. Local businesses provided job-shad-owing and touring opportunities as part of the program’s partnership agreements. The businesses that took part in the program were: Autumn Leaves Nursing, Bank of Winnfield, Winn Parish Medical Center, Winn Community Health Center and Dental, Johnny’s Pizza, American Discount Furniture, Brewton Express, Dr. Latrelle Camp, Veterinarian; Weyerhaeuser, Arclin, State Farm – Laurinda Crenshaw, Agent; Hixson Lumber, Lorraine & Co. Hair Salon, Envy Salon and Day Spa, Lynda’s Country Kitchen, City of Winnfield, Flowers of Design by Candace, Scentsational Scents, WinnParish Library, Winn Fuel Service, P.K. Smith Motors, Pea Patch, Pharmacy Services, Winn Parish District Attorney’s Office, Winn Parish Clerk of Court’s Office, and United States Forest Service.
