DARE Officer Jones Speaks at Recent Rotary Meeting

When DARE first came to schools across the country, the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program aimed at teaching young children to “Say NO to Drugs.” However, the focus has changed local DARE officer Anna Jones told the Rotary Club of Winnfield on May 17.

As it turned out, the more children learned about drugs, the more likely they were to being exposed to them. As a result, DARE personnel now go into schools as officers to help children develop a positive relationship with law enforcement. There were 403 students who took part in Winn’s DARE program this year just ended.

“In the past, we were unintentionally showing kids what they could do,” Jones explained. “Now we teach about choices, consequences, responsibilities. How to be safe. Now we talk about alcohol, tobacco, bullying. How to respond. How to avoid situations.”
