Winnfield Rotary Celebrates 90 Years

Members of the Rotary Club of Winnfield celebrated the 90th anniversary of the founding of the local service organization with a family-centered fish fry May 4.

The club was chartered May 13, 1927, when there were only a few Rotary clubs established in Louisiana. Shreveport was the first in 1914, followed by Alexandria (1916) and Monroe (1918). Smaller towns began to see clubs in 1922 (Natchitoches), 1924 (Leesville) and 1925 (Bunkie). A second Shreveport club (South Shreveport) came online just six weeks before Winnfield.

With a motto of “Service Above Self,” Rotarians also work under another Rotary Foundation theme of “Doing Good in the World.” Their benchmark project today is the eradication of polio from the globe. Through giving, volunteering and forging alliances with governments and organizations, Rotary has led a $10 billion campaign over the past 35 years that has seen 2.5 billion children vaccinated. Worldwide 500,000 children were stricken with polio every year in the late 1970s. Only 37 were stricken in 2016. So far in 2017, that number is 5 (in Pakistan and Afghanistan).
