Grace Margaret Simpson Melton

Grace Margaret Simpson Melton died peacefully Monday, April 14, 2014, at the age of 91. She was born May 9, 1922 to Frank and Helen Simpson in Bloomington, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Ernest H. Melton, Sr.; her parents and sisters, Bette, Trude, Hazel, and Linda; brothers, Lyle, Dick, and Bob Simpson, and one grandchild Tonya Lynn Melton. Grace is survived by one son, Ernest H. “Rusty” Melton, Jr. and wife Lou of St. Francisville, La.; and one daughter, Janice Stroud and husband Glen of Atlanta, La.; five grandchildren: Wendy Burns, Dena Howard, Chad Melton, Monica James and Shelley Jones; ten grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. Mrs. Melton graduated from Pacific Grove High School in 1941. While living in Riverside, California, she met and married her husband Ernie, while he was stationed in California during World War II. They moved to Louisiana after the war and lived the rest of their married life in Winnfield, La., Grace worked as a clerk typist for many years with the Louisiana Dept of Welfare. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother and a wonderful Christian example for her family. Funeral services were held at the Southern Funeral Home Chapel in Winnfield at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 17, 2014 with Rev. Jack Miller and Lloyd Hennigan officiating. Mrs. Melton was laid to rest in the Melton Cemetery located near Packton, La. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Autumn Leaves Nursing home of Winnfield and Southern Funeral Home for the kindness and care given to our beloved mother / grandmother. Pallbearers were Chad Melton, Ty James, Tyler Howard, Logan James, Jeff Howard, Jared Jones, Jerry Price and David Quimby.
