Winnfield Kiwanis Club Hears About Hog Dog Trials

Deano Thornton, representative from the Kiwanis club to the Hog Dog Trials Board, gave a history of the Hog Dog Trials. They began in 1995 as a way to honor Earl Long’s 100th birthday. The idea began with Claude L. O’Bryan and was a Saturday only event the first year. After several years and some conflict a year was missed. The next year the Hog Dog Trials was restarted with the civic clubs having ownership. Each civic club has a representative on the board. Uncle Earl’s Hog Dog Trials were trademarked so that they could not be taken out of Winn Parish.

Thornton introduced Jake Loiacano, the new producer of the Hog Dog Trials. He said this is a dream job for him because he has been coming here since he was a child. He was working back in the pens behind the arena. The Uncle Earl’s Hog Dog Trials is the biggest hog baying in the world. It can be considered a field trial. After this year’s is over he will begin marketing for next year. Jake believes that calling it a field trial will bring corporate sponsors. He wants it to be bigger and better.
