Ira Joe “Joe Bear” Ates February 12, 1962 August 21, 2024

Ira Joe “Joe Bear” Ates passed away on August 21, 2024 at the age of 62, in Belle Chasse, Louisiana. Joey was a cherished member of his community and a friend to anyone he met. He is survived by his daughters, Ashley White and Kristen Ates; granddaughter Alynsa Ates; grandson Evren Ates; son in law Darren White; devil cat companion Lucy; sister, Janice Pitre; niece, Frances Famularo; nephew, BJ Barber; nephew, Darren Pitre, and many other people proud to call him family. Joey was preceded in death by his parents Frances Ann Troquille Ates, William Allen (W.A) Ates, and his beloved Ma Joy.
Joey had the ability to walk into a room full of strangers and leave with new friends. Whether it was from telling stories of his glory days playing football or waiting for the perfect opportunity to belt out his favorite lyrics, it was always easy to know if he was around. His love for the Saints and LSU was as well known as his love for his two daughters and grandbabies. Joey was well known and loved in his community. Friends often checked in on him, delivering food and medicine when he was unable to get it himself and knew his daily routines. When people couldn’t understand his unique way of speaking, he had translators at the ready. To know that he was taken care of by so many individuals who wanted the best for him is a comfort to his family. While on the surface he was a man who didn’t have much, he was wealthy in spirit.
A memorial service will be organized for family members and friends in the Winnfield area, with details to be provided as arrangements are finalized. In lieu of flowers, contributions to assist with cremation expenses can be made through a GoFundMe campaign a t https://gofund.me/d09 7ca50.
Joe Bear’s memory will be honored by the love and stories shared by those who knew him best.
