Football Contest Winners Announced

A week of college football upsets took its toll on those trying to pick the winners in Week nine of the football season.

After having our first week of a prognosticator getting all the games right, the first place prize this week went to someone who got 12 out of 17 games correct.

Rodney Alderman, a frequent top finisher, missed just four games this week. One of the games was thrown out because of a schedule change. So the LaSalle game was a freebie. The original schedule had LaSalle taking on Beckman; however, they actually played Northwood. They won that game 24-20.

Alderman missed the Grambling upset of Alcorn State (35-6), the McNeese loss to Southeastern (28-27), the Westminister win over Montgomery (37-8) and the East Carolina win over BYU (27-24).

It’s always fascinating to hear the history and accomplishments of some of Winnfield’s own. It feels a little bit like a personal experience for each of us who hear of someone from our city who has achieved accomplishments and excelled in things. That is especially true when it comes to sports, because Winnfield is big on sports.

Lionel Johnson, a native and current resident of Winnfield had an impressive career as a football player at Winnfield High School and then with the Texas Longhorns. His high school years spanned from 1970-1972. He was the program’s career leader for tackles.
