Dr. Jerry W. Williams

Dr. Jerry W. Williams, a distinguished optometrist and esteemed member of the Winnfield community, passed away peacefully at his home on January 15, 2025, at the age of 91. He was born on April 23, 1933 in Mansfield, LA.
Dr. Williams dedicated 64 years of service in the field of optometry. His unwavering commitment to his patients and the field began after graduating from Southwestern and completing his studies at the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, where he met his beloved wife, Guendill.
Dr. Williams further honed his skills during his military service while stationed at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C. He worked in the eye clinic and met national leaders such as President Dwight D. Eisenhower, General George Marshall, and General Claire Chennault. He also took part in a groundbreaking study on the human cornea that would help make transplant surgery possible. He also did research on the detection and understanding of glaucoma.
Following his military service, Dr. Williams began practicing in Ruston, LA and later established his optometry practice in Winnfield in 1960. He continued to serve his patients with unwavering dedication, ultimately earning the distinction of being the longest-practicing optometrist in the country—a testament to his enduring passion for his work.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Williams was a loving family man and an active member of the Winnfield community. He was an active member and deacon of First Baptist Church in Winnfield, served on the Winn Parish Library Board, and was a member of the Kiwanis where he served as president multiple times. In the fall of 2024, he was presented with a 65-year membership pin for his service to the Kiwanis.
Dr. Williams was preceded in death by his wife, Guendill C. Williams, and his two sons, Jerry W. “Jeb” Williams Jr. and Robert E. Williams. He is survived by several cousins, two nieces, and a nephew. He is also survived by his long-time office manager and family friend, Gayle Gilcrease (Glenn), and her children, Dr. Edward Gilcrease (Eve) and Sharon Long (Ricky) and their children Ryker, Liam, and Olivia.
Funeral services were held at First Baptist Church of Winnfield at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2025. Interment followed in the Garden of Memories. Friends visited with the family at Southern Funeral Home on Friday, January 17, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
