David Christman
David Eugene Christman passed from this mortal life and entered his eternal home on August 14, 2023. David was born on November 10, 1934, to Lloyd Christman and Lois (née) Loflin Christman in Clarks, Louisiana.
David graduated with his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern State University. He then served in the United States Army after the Korean War. Later he completed his master’s in social work from Louisiana State University.
He began his career with Northwestern State University as an adjunct professor in charge of the North Central Louisiana Special Education Testing Team. After retiring in 1980, David began a second career with the State of Louisiana Children’s Social Services, as part of a team helping children in need. In the latter part of his stint with the State of Louisiana, he inspected nursing homes. David retired for the second time in 1998.
David married Betty Watley on January 14, 1961, in Natchitoches, Louisiana. They moved to Winnfield in 1967, where they raised their four boys. David and Betty were active members of Winnfield Family Church, and David served as church secretary for many years. His roles also included leading congregational singing, teaching literacy and alcohol recovery programs in the prisons, and mowing the church lawn.
David was a celebrated multiple cancer survivor and was involved in the American Cancer Society. He and Betty were also involved in many other associations throughout the years.
After sixty-one years of marriage, David’s wife, Betty, preceded him in death. He joins his two brothers, Wilbur Christman and Lloyd Christman; his daughter, Lois Elizabeth Christman; his grandson, Chase Christman; his granddaughter, Caroline Christman; and his two daughters- in-law, Betty Christman and Tammie Christman in the Kingdom of Heaven.
David leaves behind his four sons and daughters-inlaw: David (Liz), Jonathan (Kelly), Michael (Becky), and Daniel (Bridget), along with eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
The family received friends on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at The Southern Funeral Home in Winnfield, Louisiana at 1:00 pm. Graveside services were held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at Garden of Memories, in Winnfield.
Serving as pallbearers were his sons David Christman Jr., Jonathan Christman, Michael Christman, and Daniel Christman, and his grandsons Austin Christman, Joseph Christman, and Carson Christman.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
