Elizabeth Louise (Poe) Wright

Elizabeth Louise (Poe) Wright

Ms. Elizabeth Louise (Poe) Wright was received into Heaven on Monday, February 20, 2023. Betty, as she was affectionately known, was born to the union of Lesley Earle Poe and Bessie Marie (Thompson) Poe in Jena, Louisiana on January 18, 1925. After finishing high school in Nacogdoches, Texas, she attended LSU where she met Hiram James Wright. They were married in June 1945 after Hiram returned from WWII.

While attending LSU, Betty studied business and was named a Darling of LSU in 1945.

Betty lived in LaSalle Parish and Texas for some of her early years, but always called Winnfield home after she and Hiram settled there in 1948. After moving to Winnfield, she worked as Hiram’s secretary when he established his law practice, and retired from that position when he was elected City Judge in 1969.

Besides working as Hiram’s secretary and raising their four children, Jim, Earle, Katherine, and Mary, Betty was very active in the Winnfield chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and worked with her mother and sister to layout the family history. She also dearly loved and was very active in the First United Methodist Church, teaching

Sunday School to pre-K children for a number of years, and singing in the church choir. She was an avid gardener, often sharing her beautiful roses with friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her husband Hiram; infant son; and her son Jim. Those left to love and miss her are her son, Earle Wesley Wright and wife Kim Elizabeth (Hobgood) of Clinton, Louisiana; Katherine Ann (Wright) King of Zachary, Louisiana; Mary Elizabeth (Wright) Vaughan and husband Hines, Jr. of North Bend, Oregon; seven grandchildren, Justin King and wife Sarah (Shirley) King, Allison (King) Holiday and husband Brian, Ryan King and wife Laney (Joffrion) King, Sarah (Wright) Kinchen and husband Brad, Jessica Wright, Elizabeth Vaughan, and Hines Vaughan, III and wife Kassandra (Perez) Vaughan. She is also survived by eight great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, and friends.

Betty’s family extends their thanks to her caregivers-Yolanda Roberson, Brenda Williams, and Mikey Cabellero- who took excellent care of her in a kind and loving manner in her later years.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at the First United Methodist Church in Winnfield from 1:00PM until time of services at 2:00PM with Rev. Jimmy Walker and Rev. Katie Black officiating. Interment will follow in the Garden of Memories of Winnfield.

Honored to serve the family as pallbearers are Justin King, Ryan King, Brad Kinchen, Ayden Wright, Don Brown, and Randy Wright. Honorary pallbearers will be Hines Vaughan, Jr., Hines Vaughan, III, and Clay LaCroix.
