Charles Price Tomlinson

Charles Price Tomlinson Tomlinson of Austin TX, Rebecca Tomlinson of Key West FL, Patty and Bart Thomas of Lake Charles LA, James Tomlinson of Lake Orion MI, and Vicki Castagna in Boulder CO. Charles, along with Joy, his wife and partner-in-adventure, resided with Vicki in the mountains of Colorado.

Family and friends were invited to attend his Celebration of Life service at the Southern Funeral Home in Winnfield Saturday, July 30. Visitation began at noon on Saturday with the service at 2pm in the Chapel of the Southern Funeral Home with the interment following at Garden of Memories.

Charles was born to Irma Ikerd Tomlinson and Price Hartford Tomlinson on February 27, 1933, in Ruston, LA. He graduated from Winnfield High School in 1951 and graduated with a double major in Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration from Louisiana Tech in Ruston in 1956.

Charles served in the United States Air Force as a 1st Lieutenant and in the United States Air Force Reserve as a Captain. He had a long and distinguished career as a space engineer with General Dynamics Astronautics and Boeing/NASA. He worked as part of the booster rocket design team for the Apollo rocket missions and is listed in the Apollo/Saturn V Roll of Honor, Section II. He retired from the Army Corp of Engineers after 24 years of service as a Supervisory Industrial Engineer at Fort Polk.

Charles met the love of his life, Joy Belle Simmons, in high school and married her in 1953., Together, they built a life that included raising their five children – Vicki Jean, James Price, Patricia Ann, Rebecca Joy, and Charles Nathan. Though life and work took them away from Winnfield, they returned to the community in 1982 and lived on Saline Lake for 34 years. Charles and Joy would have celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary on November 21 of this year.

Charles was a devoted Christian who loved gospel music and studying the Word of God. He also loved fishing on Saline Lake and being with his children, 18 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents Irma and Price Tomlinson of Winnfield, and his sisters Betty Jo Sydes of Ruston and Dottie Ann Carpenter of Many. He is survived by his loving family and their families including Chuck and Andrea Tomlinson of Austin TX, Rebecca Tomlinson of Key West FL, Patty and Bart Thomas of Lake Charles LA, James Tomlinson of Lake Orion MI, and Vicki Castagna in Boulder CO.
